In 1665 Robert Hooke published his Micrographia. It contained excellent drawings of fleas by Christopher Wren, but it was not just a book about the microscope. It advanced a complete theory of light based on the mechanical philosophy of Descartes. Isaac was curious to test Hooke’s conclusions.
